This generation’s got it made as far as cribs are concerned.

In the previous generation the cribs were a bit more unstable than today’s models. They were supposed to be free standing, but they twisted in place unless they were shoved against two walls. Why?

Because one or both of the sides of the crib slid up and down. Sliding the side down was really the only way you could get to your infant. The mattress was only in one position – low. If a baby was old enough to pull themselves up, the parents really had to watch. The crib would rock so much, the parent would hurry to get their child because they’d be afraid of the crib side coming down and the baby falling out.

And a crib was just a crib. When your child was old enough to climb out of the crib on his/her own, it was time to get another bed. Parents on a tight budget tended to wait as long as possible before bearing that expense. At times the time for a new bed was when the child fell out of the crib. Sometimes not a pretty sight.

But this generation has the opportunity to buy all the beds at once, for a fraction of the cost. With all the convertible cribs on the market, parents can now buy just one bed (with the conversion kits) and change it as the child grows. Wow. How nice that is!

The construction of the crib is more solid because the sides, generally, don’t move. The mattress does. The mattress can be moved into 3 or more heights for easy access. What a feature!

And when the child is ready, change the crib to the next size. Parents don’t have to wait for the child to get injured before they have to buy a new bed. They already have it!

This generation has it made!
